EU advisors make 280 recommendations to improve green taxonomy
Proposals focus on making the climate and environmental criteria more usable, and strengthening alignment with other EU legislation
The European Commission’s advisory body has made nearly 300 suggestions to improve the EU Taxonomy Regulation.
The Commission asked its Platform on Sustainable Finance for feedback on the technical rules for measuring a company’s contribution to climate change and broader environmental objectives, along with the ‘do no significant harm’ criteria.
The request was part of a scheduled review, which also included a public consultation.
It resulted in the Platform submitting 280 recommendations on Wednesday, primarily focused on climate-related activities across transport, manufacturing, construction and real estate, energy and forestry.
The recommendations seek to enhance the usability of the taxonomy and strengthen alignment with other EU legislation and market practices.
The Platform also advised the Commission to review all its taxonomy‑related guidance to ensure alignment with the updated Delegated Acts, and to upgrade its ‘taxonomy compass’ to highlight sectoral EU legislation and existing datasets that could be helpful to companies.
It identified five areas that required further thinking, including the relationship between the Taxonomy and the EU Emissions Trading System, and the integration of data on critical raw minerals.
The Commission will consider the recommendations – as well as the responses from the public consultation – as it works towards finalising the Climate and Environmental Delegated Acts in the next few weeks.
