SBTi wants companies to pilot new net-zero standard
Target-setting body calls on firms of ‘all sizes and locations’ to participate in trial
The Science-based Targets initiative (SBTi) is seeking companies to roadtest its draft net zero standard.
The new standard will replace its existing framework, which has been in place since 2021.
Having received more than 850 responses to a recent consultation on the draft, the body is now moving onto the next phase of its development.
Among other changes, SBTi wants to take a more flexible approach to value chain Scope 3 emissions after it was forced to axe 239 companies from its platform last year for failing to fulfil its current Scope 3 criteria.
It is inviting firms of “all sizes and locations” to participate in a pilot to help it ensure its new net-zero standard is both scientifically robust and practical.
Companies can complete a survey in which they are able to express an interest in taking part in the trial.
Those selected will roadtest the draft standard using real-world data, to “identify any implementation challenges, validate key methodological assumptions, and gather in-depth feedback,” according to SBTi.
“After seeing an impressive level of engagement across the ecosystem in the public consultation on the first draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2, pilot testing is the next stage where we will gather more practical, first-hand insights,” said Alberto Carrillo, SBTi’s chief technical officer.
The pilot test survey is open until the 15th August.
