The REP Wrap: DP World launches carbon inset programme

Emirati logistics firm DP World has launched a carbon inset programme to help ocean freight customers in Belgium, Portugal and Sweden reduce their Scope 3 emissions. As of April, importers and exporters using DP World will receive carbon credits worth 100 kg of carbon dioxide per standard container (TEU), once a threshold of 25 TEUs per quarter has been reached.  

The Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility (ACCR) has kicked off an appeal against a recent legal ruling in favour of Santos. The Australian courts sided with the energy firm in a greenwashing case brought by ACCR, which Real Economy Progress covered here. Brynn O’Brien, ACCR’s co-CEO, said: “In our view, the judgement sets the bar for corporate communication about climate commitments well below market and investor expectations”. 

Last week’s court ruling against Yves Rocher has been described as “valuable input for the post-transposition phase” of the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. The case relates to a Turkish subsidiary of the French beauty firm, which was accused of breaching labour rights under France’s Duty of Vigilance Law. Business and human rights expert Eckart von Malsen explained why the ruling was so important for companies and courts across Europe in analysis published this week. 

Google has signed a carbon removal deal to prevent 200,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from reaching the atmosphere by turning landfill waste into carbon rich charcoal. The multi-year carbon credit agreement is with Commonwealth Sortation, an affiliate of AI-powered waste sorting firm, AMP Robotics Corporation. 

UK supermarkets have put more pressure on Brazilian trade body Abiove over its decision to quit the Amazon Soy Moratorium earlier this year. The UK Soy Manifesto, which convenes businesses representing more than 60% of UK soy demand – including Tesco, M&S and Sainsbury’s – want assurances that soy traders will honour the 2008 cut-off date for deforested land established under the pledge.
