Meta and Apple to bolster carbon removal teams to meet climate goals
Tech giants are both recruiting experts to help expand their work in the space
Apple and Meta are both building up carbon removal expertise in a bid to meet their climate targets.
Apple is looking for a specialist to join its environment, policy and social initiatives team, and to lead its efforts to tackle “unavoidable” emissions in its value chain.
The Californian firm has committed to be carbon neutral across its entire business by 2030, with a quarter of emission reductions coming from carbon removal.
In the job ad, it says it needs someone to work with its finance, government affairs and legal teams to “champion, drive, and coordinate carbon removal projects”.
The work might also cover projects that avoid emissions, rather than removing them, Apple added.
Meanwhile, Meta is hunting a manager to develop and scale up its carbon removals programme.
The social media giant has also pledged to be net zero across it value chain by the end of the decade, with carbon removals being used for emissions it concludes it can’t reduce.
As part of its strategy, it will support the expansion of the voluntary carbon market to include projects that go beyond carbon sequestration.
Meta’s new recruit will be responsible for “scoping, conducting due diligence and participating in contract negotiation and management for verified carbon projects,” according to the job description.
Apple will pay between $184,300 and $326,300 for its role, while Meta is offering between $152,000 and $221,000.
Last month, rival tech giant Google signed its first two long-term purchase agreements for biochar-based carbon removals.
According to carbon data firm Sylvera, which has just started rating biochar projects, the technology accounted for more than 90% of all carbon credits issued from removal projects in 2023.
